Descriptive observations can generate questions, but they do not by themselves establish mechanism, diagnosis or causality. This distinction is especially important in interdisciplinary work where psychological and behavioral factors are also considered.nnA practical structure is to record the observation, identify relevant variables, review the available literature, state competing explanations and then define what additional evidence would be needed. The result is more transparent and easier to critique.
